Giving wood ducks a safe place to nest

Intro: Southern Quacker Wildlife Conservation builds, installs, and monitors nest boxes designed specifically for wood ducks across Louisiana wetlands and private lands. Each box provides critical nesting habitat that helps rebuild local populations and supports the health of our forested wetlands.

Why Nest Boxes Matter Wood ducks nest in tree cavities. As natural cavities have become scarce, well-designed nest boxes give these birds a secure place to lay eggs and raise ducklings. Properly placed and maintained boxes significantly improve nesting success in areas like the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area.

How the Program Works

• We construct durable nest boxes with the right dimensions, entrance size, and predator protection

• Boxes are installed in suitable wetland and bottomland habitat

• We monitor boxes during the nesting season and track success

• Data helps guide future placements and improve outcomes

• All work is carried out by volunteers in partnership with landowners and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries
